Autograph letter signed : 23 Wall Street [New York], to Mr. and Mrs. J. Montgomery Sears, 1904 Dec. 22.

Sending a gold vase, the design of which is based on old Genovese velvet, as a Christmas present and thanking them profusely for a recent visit: "I hope that it will serve as a little souvenir of the joy you gave me by my visit at 12 Arlington Street in October--Of all that visit meant to me not only in the pleasures but also in my being there at all I cannot begin to tell you--There are times in a man's life when words fail and a pen is also [illeg.] useless to give expression to what one feels and would long to pour forth. Such is my condition today. I can never forget all you did for me or how you did it--there never was anything ever done like it. I feel you will understand the feelings I so long to make clear. I can only say I thank you both _so_ tenderly with all my heart."
